Mankiw on relative wealth

The apparent preference for relative over absolute wealth has always bothered me.  Either people really do think this way (which means people sometimes prefer what is clearly a lesser outcome, which is dumb) or they don’t act this way, but claim they do in surveys (which means, well, they’re still dumb).
